The Supreme Court today granted leave to proceed with the case filed by the National Freedom Front against the increment of VAT.

Leader of National Freedom Front MP Wimal Weerasinghe filed a petition on the 11th of this month stating that reforms to the relevant Act is necessary in order to increase or make amendments to the VAT.

The petition also shows that it is not legitimate for the Finance Minister to implement the VAT increment without making reforms to the ACT.

In addition, the Finance Minister, the Secretary to the Finance Ministry and the Attorney General have been named as respondents of the petition.
