Ministry of Women and Child Affairs, the Children’s Secretariat and the Department of Census and Statistics will be conducting a census of early childhood for the first time in Sri Lanka as part of a World Bank project.
A Workshop to train Early Childhood Development Officers will be held in Colombo at the Central Environment Authority premises and at the Talahena Community Centre on June 22, 23, 24 and 27 with the objective of making the all island census of children below five years of age a success.
The programme conducted with the aid of new technology has the objective of developing early childhood and providing a more secure future for children. It also anticipates to eliminate child labour from the country.
The programme also expects to rectify the shortcomings in pre-schools and uplift the quality of pre-school teachers. A further objective of the census is to identify the economic difficulties of parents and raise their living standards.
