Thirty six (36) Sri Lankan Tamil refugees, from Tamil Nadu, India, will return to Sri Lanka today (28) under the UNHCR facilitated voluntary repatriation programme. They are scheduled to arrive on a Mihin Lanka flight, from Chennai.
Minister of Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs, D. M. Swaminathan, had discussions with the UNHCR and facilitated the return process and increased the baggage allowance per person, with assistance of the Ministry of Public Enterprise Development and Mihin Lanka Airlines.
Secretary to the Ministry of Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs, V. Sivagnanasothy, said that the 36 returnees include 20 males and 16 females. These returnees will go back to Kilinochchi, Mannar, Jaffna, Colombo, Trincomalee and Vavuniya.
