The Ministry of Local Government and Provincial Councils released a communiqué today saying the Chairman of the Election Commission has made a false statement.
It stated that the Chairman of the Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya has enquired in a letter addressed to the Secretary to the Local Government and Provincial Councils Ministry Kamal Padmasiri, regarding the divisions that have delimitation issues.
Reports indicated that the Election Commissioner has mentioned regarding the matter during a media conference held on the 20th of this month.
However, the Ministerial Secretary Kamal Padmasiri stated in his communiqué today that he did not receive such a letter from the Election Commissioner.
He says that he received only a copy of a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Delimitation Commission Asoka Peries.
When our news team contacted the Election Commission with regard to the matter, a Commission spokesman said various parties have enquired about the postponement of local government polls by the Election Commission.
Accordingly, the Election Commission’s Chairman has sent a letter to Delimitation Commission’s Chairman Asoka Peiris on June 11th.
In his letter to Asoka Peiris, Election Commission’s Chairman has asked Peiris to provide clear explanation regarding the divisions, where the investigations have been concluded over the previous disputes.
A copy of the letter addressed to the Delimitation Commission Chairman was also sent to Local government and Provincial Councils Ministry Secretary, asking him to provide the relevant information.
The Election Commission has not received any feedback although over a month has been lapsed already.
A spokesman from the Election Commission stated that the Commissioner has mentioned about the relevant letter and the officials to whom he sent copies of the letter.
He said that nothing else had occurred during the media conference held on June 20th.
Chairman of the Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya told our news team that he is not ready to respond to communiqués issued by a public official.
He further said that he will discuss the matter with the members of the Commission and inform the respective authorities.
