A tense situation erupted when compensation was about to be distributed among villagers whose lands were submerged in the Morana Irrigation Project of the Ridimaliyadda Divisional Secretariat in Moneragala.
People showed their displeasure regarding the mechanism of distributing compensation during an event held under the patronage of Irrigation Minister Vijith Vijayamuni Soyza yesterday.
The Morana Irrigation project was halted due to a protest staged by 600 families who complained that the lands they lost have not been valued properly for compensation.
However 85 families were paid compensation yesterday in order to recommence the project.
Accordingly, authorities have decided to pay a compensation of Rs. 30,000 per acre for the relevant lands.
However, the affected families refused the compensation and raised objections towards the decision made by the authorities.
Meanwhile, our correspondent stated that Irrigation Minister compelled the families to accept the compensation.
