Extension of Terms in Office of Local Government Bodies to be Considered

The official term of 23 local government bodies including Municipal councils ends  tomorrow.

Minister in charge, Faizer Mustafa, said that the decision as to whether to extend the term in office of these local government bodies, to bring them under a special commissioner,  would be taken after a discussion between the President and the Prime Minister this afternoon.

312 of the 335 local government bodies have by now been dissolved as their terms have ended.

17 Municipal councils, 1 Urban Council and 5 Divisional Councils are among the local government bodies that end their term with effect from tomorrow.

The term of office of the Colombo, Dehiwela - Mt. Lavinia, Kotte, Moratuwa, Gampaha, Negombo, Kurunegala, Kandy, Matale, Nuwara Eliya, Badulla, Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Ratnapura, Anuradhapura and Kalmunai  Municipal Councils thus end tomorrow.

In addition the tenure of office of the Kolonnaawa Urban Council and the Kotikawatta – Mulleriyawa, Kundasale, Gangavata Korale and Sooryawaewa Divisional Councils too will thus end.
