Internal government sources say that final discussions regarding the two nominees under consideration for the appointment of Central bank governor is currently underway.
It has been reported that one of the nominees is a senior officer serving at the Central bank while the other, is a professor of economics.
The new governor of the central bank will be announced following final discussions held between the president, prime minister, minister of finance and other state officials.
The current central bank governor, Arjun Mahendran’s term ends today and he announced that he would not be extending his term until the COPE committee concludes the investigation into the bond issues.
Yesterday at a public gathering in Giraanduru Kotte, President Maithreepala Sirisena confirmed that a decision has been arrived at to appoint a new governor for the central bank.
It has been reported that internal discussions were being held regarding the matter on Wednesday evening and continued this morning.
