Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy was handed over the letter of appointment as the new Central Bank Governor this morning by President Maithreepala Sirisena.
He will take over his duties from this morning.
He replaces former Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran whose duty period expired on 30th last month.
Dr. Coomaraswamy who was born in 1950, pursued his education at Royal College Colombo and Harrow College in England.
He holds a first class honours degree from the Cambridge University and obtained his PhD from the Sussex University.
After joining the Central Bank in the year 1973, he served as an officer attached to the sections of economic research, statistics and Bank Supervision until 1989.
He also served in the Ministry of Finance and Planning from 1981 to 1989.
Later he served as the Director of Economic Affairs at the Commonwealth Secretariat from 1990 to 2008.
