The Republican Party of Iowa and Donald Trump’s presidential campaign on Tuesday accused the FBI of caving to political pressure in its investigation into presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s email practices.
“This is a rigged system that obviously is showing some blatant favoritism,” Republican Party of Iowa Chairman Jeff Kaufmann said in a conference call with reporters.
The comments came a few hours after FBI Director James Comey announced that the agency would not recommend criminal charges against Clinton for distributing classified information on an unsecured private email server, even though he said doing so was “extremely careless.”
Iowa Republican Party Chairman Jeff Kaufmann said the announcement Tuesday, July 5, 2016, that no charges should be pursued against Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton for her email practices shows the system is "rigged."
When asked if they thought Comey should resign, though, both Goertz and Kaufmann declined to go that far.
The Clinton campaign, in turn, has responded by emphasizing the political independence of the FBI officials who investigated the matter.
