An elephant was hit by a train plying from Batticaloe to Colombo.
The incident has occurred last night near the Sewanapitiya-Mahawewa area in Polonnaruwa. Our reporter said that the hind legs of the elephant have been seriously injured.
Villagers say the train which runs through a huge forest is a threat to the lives of elephants.
Environmentalists point out that lack of an electric fence or any other barricade contribute to such accidents.
They said that the Engine Drivers should also be educated about the places of elephant movements.
The locomotive driver immediately informed the area station Master, who in turn informed Forest Officers about the incident.
