A number of factors with archaeological significance, expected to give a new perspective into the history of Polonnaruwa, have been identified during excavation activities carried out by the Central Cultural Fund near the Polonnaruwa inner city wall.

The Director General of the Central Cultural Fund, Professor Prishantha Gunawardena said that a metal mould used for manufacturing coins is among the findings.

Furthermore, ruins of an ancient tomb have been found during the excavations.

The Director General of the Central Cultural Fund stated that with the ruins of the tomb found, it can be assumed that there have been human settlements in Polonnaruwa even during the Anuradhapura era.
