Badulla Senior Superintendent of Police office says that for the purpose of saving property and human life the police has the authority to shoot persons setting fire to forests.

This year alone, 80 forest arsons have been reported from the Badulla District.

The most recent fire was reported from Kumbulwela Reserve in Ella in Badulla, which caused the destruction of approximately 2000 acres.

Badulla District Secretary Nimal Abeysiri along with senior police officers in charge of the area participated in the discussion.

On this occasion Badulla SSP Dhammika Weerasekera said that police personnel from the IGP to the police constable had the authority to shoot those who set fire to forests.
