37 Elephants Die within 6 Months in Northwestern and Anuradhapura Regions

Reports indicated that 37 elephants have died within the first 6 months of the year in Northwestern and Anuradhapura wildlife zones.

Veterinarian in charge of the zone, Chandana Jayasinghe noted that 15 among them have been either shot dead or succumbed to gun fire wounds.

Another 18 elephants have been killed with illegal hunting devices called 'hakka patas', poisoning as well as by electrocution.

Meanwhile, the wild elephant who was suffering from a gun fire wound for a month at Palukongas wewa in Nellikulama, Anuradhapura also died yesterday.
