A youth killed a school girl related to him at Manamadurai in Sivaganga district in Tamil Nadu-India before attempting suicide. He is in a critical state and is undergoing treatment at the Sivaganga Medical College Hospital, Indian media reports.

Kaliswari, 11, studying in the 6th standard at the government school in Melanattur, is a distant relative of S Karthik, 25, a truck driver from Ganapathienthal village in Sivaganga district. On Monday evening, Kaliswari did not return home after school hours and her mother, Jaya, was told that Karthik had picked her up after school. When she called him on the mobile phone, he kept saying that they were on their way to the village.

Later in the evening, he called up Jaya and told her that he had killed her daughter. She could not contact him after that. Worried, she filed a complaint with the Manamadurai police and a team led by Manamadurai DSP carried out a search operation. Even as the search was on, Karthik called his mother at night and told her that he had consumed poison, giving away his whereabouts - the wilderness near his village. Police rushed to the spot and found Karthik unconscious; he had three cuts on the throat. There was also a pesticide bottle near him. He was rescued and taken to hospital.

The police team continued their search for the missing girl and Karthik, who gained consciousness for a brief while on Tuesday morning, said he had killed the girl and the body was in a dry water body near the spot from which he was rescued. The police recovered the body of the girl, whose throat was found slit, and sent it to the Sivaganga government hospital for postmortem, reportedly.

Tamil Nadu Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
