The 82-year-old Japanese Emperor Akihito has announced his intention to abdicate in the coming years, as reported by Japanese media.

The emperor, who has had health problems in recent years, has not cited a solid reason for his decision.

He has been head of state for 27 years and his abdication would be an unprecedented move in modern Japan while 56 year-old Crown Prince Naruhito is the next in line to succeed him followed by the emperor’s abdication.
