The Chairman of the Consumer Affairs Authority Hasitha Thilakarathna said that legal action will be taken against the traders who sell commodities at higher prices than the maximum prices announced by the government yesterday.
Meanwhile the association of importers and merchants of essential goods stated that three commodities under controlled pricing are being disputed.
Association chairman Nihal Seneviratne said sugar, sprats and grams cannot be provided at the given prices due to the high import duty.
However Consumer Affairs Authority Chairman Hasitha Seneviratne said that all traders are bound to sell all essential commodities at their given prices as the relevant gazette notification has been released.
Meanwhile traffic in Pettah and in its surrounding areas was blocked due to a protest launched by traders in the areas against the increased VAT.
