Foiling the attempt to overturn a democratically-elected government through a military coup would please all people who valued democracy, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has stated.
In a special statement he said he was happy ‘to note that the president and prime minister of Turkey had been able to preserve democratic rule and assured the support of Sri Lanka and its people’.
He expressed his support to Turkey as the attempt to take over the government was hindered by authorities.
A group of military officials attempted to take over the government on Friday. At least 200 people were killed in the incident.
