At a discussion among invited representatives of media organizations held at the Department of Government Information (DGI) recently, it was decided to prepare a preliminary draft for the appointment of the proposed Independent Media Commission, with the objective of developing an ethical media culture in Sri Lanka.
A five-member committee was appointed to prepare the draft. Wijayananda Jayaweera, Former Director Communication Development Division, Head of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) International Program for the Development of Communication, has been appointed its Chairman.
Other members of the committee are Seetha Ranjani, Convener, Free Media Movement, D. Lankapeli, Federation of Media Employees Trade Union Federation, Upali Arambawela, a representative of electronic media and R. Bharathi, Sri Lanka Tamil Media Collective.
The committee also discussed the professional status of journalists including a minimum wage. A special discussion was also held regarding steps to be taken to re-issue media identity cards under a suitable methodology as certain parties are reported to be abusing the present Identity Card (ID) issues by the Department of Government Information.
The first meeting of the Drafting Committee will be held today (18) at the Department of Government Information.
