A 31-year-old Indian-origin woman and her four-month-old son died after a fall from a balcony in Melbourne, Australia.

Supraja Srinivas, a software engineer, belonged to Nizamabad district in Telangana state of India. She moved to Australia after marrying Gannaram Srinivas in 2006.

She is believed to have taken her own life, and that of her child.

Suparja was holding her son when she fell, and they died at the scene. The bodies were found in an atrium of the apartment building.

Police are not looking for anyone in this connection.

Police said it was believed they may have fallen from an internal balcony.

The incident occurred at around 10.30 am on Thursday. A large group of police was seen around the building.

Bystander Christine Harms, from Geelong told Fairfax Media she heard screams soon after the fall.

"A lady went into the alleyway and then there was some screaming," Ms Harms said.

"I just kept hearing 'Oh no. Oh no'. It was gut-wrenching to hear."

The circumstances of Supraja and her son’s death remain unclear.
