All Island Wholesale and Retail Essential Food Item Vendors’ Union says that with the Government’s recent announcement of controlled prices for 16 items, low quality gram, sprats and dhal unfit for consumption have come into the market.
Union chairman Bandula Jayamanna told our news team that as a result of this a scarcity of gram, sprats and dhal could be experienced in the market.
Controlled prices of 16 essential items removed from VAT were announced recently.
Accordingly the controlled prices of sprats imported from Thailand and Dubai are marked respectively as 495 and 410 rupees per kilo.
Similarly red dhal was priced at 169 rupees and dhal was priced at 260 rupees per kilo.
However wholesale and retail vendors say that gram, dhal, and sprats cannot be imported and sold at prices the Government has fixed.
