The NFF leader MP Wimal Weerawansa appeared before the Presidential Commission of Inquiry on Massive Fraud and Corruption for the first time this morning.

Later, the Commission has recorded a statement from MP Weerawansa for over 6 hours with regard to an alleged financial abuse of the then Ministry of Housing and Public Utilities at the time the MP was responsible for that ministry.

A Commission spokesman told our news team that Weerawansa had been informed on multiple occasions previously to report to the Commission but he had not turned up.

Allegations have also been levelled against MP Weerawansa for providing free fuel to his private staff through State Engineering Corporation affiliated to the then Housing and Public Utilities Ministry.

Among other allegations he is faced with, is offering housing units and shops to relatives through the then Housing Development Authority.

A senior officer of the Commission said that the MP’s alleged abuses have caused the government a loss of Rs. 100 million.
