A hunger strike was launched this morning by a group of Tamil detainees at the Anuradhapura and Magazine prisons.  The protesters are demanding that the authorities speed up the process of court actions against them.

Meanwhile Prison commissioner General Nishan Dhanasinghe told our news team that the detainees gave written notice that the hunger strike would be launched.

In the past, similar hungers strikes have been carried out, demanding the very same, that the authorities speed up court actions against them.

Meanwhile, the National Movement to Free Political Prisoners staged a protest in front of the Welikada Prison, demanding the release of political detainees currently being held in remand prison.
