The historic Esala Perahera has commenced in Kandy. Its Kumbal Perahera paraded the streets successfully last night.
The event will continue till the 12th August and the traditional Randoli Perahera will commence of the 13th August till the 17th.
The water cutting ceremony of the Esala Festival will take place on the 18th morning in the Mahaweli River at the Gatambey Thotupola.
The Diyawadana Nilame of the Sri Dalada Maligawa stated that nearly 75 tamed elephants and tuskers are taking part in the event.
