The Colombo Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayarathna ordered the FCID today to conduct an investigation looking into the misplacement of the original documents of the controversial 2006, Sri Lanka Air force MIG deal.

The order was issued under the money laundering Act when the Case against former Sri Lankan ambassador to Russia Udayanga Weeratunga, who was presented before court today.

A copy of the same aircraft deal has already been produced to the Mt. Lavinia District Court in connection with another Case and, the Magistrate ordered the FCID to investigate the authenticity of the copy remaining with the Mt. Lavinia District Court.

FCID was also ordered to ascertain whether the documents were misplaced with the intention of concealing vital evidence in connection with the MIG aircraft deal.

The legal director of the Sri Lanka Air force has submitted a report to Court with regard to the MIG deal.

Having considered the Air Force legal director’s report, Magistrate Lanka Jayarathna ordered the FCID to implement the law against the perpetrators.

On a previous occasion, the FCID requested Court to issue arrest warrants for former ambassador with regard to the MIG deal.

However Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayarathna rejected the FCID’s request on that occasion.
