Former Minister of Cooperatives and Internal Trade Johnston Fernando has appeared before the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) this morning.

He was summoned to give a statement on the import of nearly 227,717 metric tons of rice through Sathosa in 2014 without the cabinet approval.

In addition, the Special Presidential Commission of Inquiry on Massive Fraud and Corruption is also conducting an investigation on the former minister for importing 60 thousand metric tons of raw rice without obtaining proper approval from the then Cabinet.

A loss of 15 billion rupees was incurred by the government in 2014 as a result of this.

In addition the Colombo Medical Research Institute tested the stock of raw rice, and found that the consignment was not suitable for human consumption.
