The Customs Trade unions called off the 5 day work to rule trade union action this afternoon.

The unions launched trade unions action on Last Monday against the proposed Customs Draft Bill.

However, Customs trade unions Chairman Dr. N.S. Kumanayake stated this afternoon that the unions decided to call off the work to rule action after the minister of finance agreed to make amendments to the proposed Draft Bill.

About 2000 importers’ documents have piled up due to the trade union action, which continued for the past five days.  Addressing the media, Kumanayake said that his members have decided to work during the weekends to clear the backlog.

Meanwhile, workers attached to the departments of Customs, Excise and Inland Revenue staged a protest in front of Lake House roundabout this afternoon.

Workers of the Excise Department protested against setting up a special excise raid unit under the supervision of the Ministry of Finance while workers of the inland revenue department protested against the finance ministry’s decision to hand over the authority of tax collection to a private firm.
