Light showers to be expected in a week; 500,000 persons still affected

519,527 individuals of 138,585 families from 17 districts of the island have been affected by the prevailing dry weather condition.

The Disaster Management Centre noted that majority of the affected persons have been reported from Polonnaruwa District, and the number of affected persons amount to 118,309.

Director General of the Met department says that inter-monsoon rains are expected after 15th of this month.

Meanwhile, all sluice gates of Polgolla Dam will be opened tomorrow to empty the reservoir for the Annual inspection.  

Accordingly, the sluice gates will be opened from 10PM tomorrow to 6 AM the following day.   

Mahaweli Authority stated that during this period, the downstream areas of Polgolla Dam will be highly dangerous.

Engineer in charge of Polgolla Dam, V.A. Pushpakumara requested the public to refrain from using the Mahaweli River in the risk-prone area.

He further stated that the annual inspection and maintenance work of the Polgolla Dam require to be completed prior to the commencement of the monsoon rains.
