The UN has proposed to set up a fully-fledged independence commission to attend to the grievances of minority communities.

Addressing a media conference held in Colombo yesterday, UN Special Rapporteur for Minority Communities Rita Izsák-Ndiaye said that such an independence commission will be able to assist in introducing the new Constitution as well as in any other efforts to build contacts among different communities.

Ndiaye made this proposal at the end of a 10-day tour of Sri Lanka, stating that the current government has taken several progressive measures already.

Ndiaye also pointed out the importance of a well-planned and well-coordinated process to establish truth, reconciliation and accountability to ensure lasting peace and harmony, achieved after a long civil war.

In addition, she said the Sri Lankan government should demonstrate its commitment to ensuring that all minorities are guaranteed the preservation of their identity, dignity and equality.

The official report by the UN special Rapporteur on minority communities is scheduled to be submitted to the Geneva Human Rights Council in Next March.
