Price of a Cigarette increased to Rs. 55
Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne says that the price of a cigarette will increase up to 55 rupees, after imposing the 15% VAT.
The Minister further noted that recently the price of a cigarette was increased by Rs. 7, and that the price is further subjected to increment, after passing the revised VAT draft bill in parliament.
He also stated that even though the price of a cigarette was previously increased up to Rs. 42, the price of locally produced cigarettes were not increased.
Participating in a meeting convened at the Health Ministry, the Minister noted that the cigarette consumption has dropped by 5%, following the price increment.
Meanwhile, the minister of health has ordered the State Pharmaceutical Corporation to reduce the price of 48 pharmaceutical drugs, with effect from tomorrow.
Accordingly the ministry noted that these pharmaceutical drugs can be obtained from 32 pharmacies of the State Pharmaceutical Corporation island-wide and other SPC representative pharmacies.
