A large crowd at the Independence Square to pay last respects to Pandit Amaradeva

Large crowds are gathering at the Independence Square in Colombo to pay their last respects to the remains of Pandit W.D. Amaradeva.

Artistes, scholars and politicians are among the crowds. 

The body was escorted in a procession from a private funeral parlor in Borella this morning.

President Maithripala Sirisena and several politicians joined artistes to hold floral tributes to the body of the late musician.

The remains of Pandit Amaradeva will lie in state at the Independence Square until 3pm tomorrow.

Addressing a media conference this afternoon, Home Affairs Minster Vajira Abeywardana said that the funeral rites will start thereafter.
