Country bids farewell to the Maestro of Sri Lankan Music Industry Pandith Amaradeva
The funeral of late veteran artiste Dr. Pandit W.D. Amaradewa was held with full state honours at the Independence Square.
The mortal remains of Pandit Amaradewa were placed on a special podium adjoining the funeral pyre.
Lecturers from the University of Visual & Performing arts carried the remains of the veteran artiste from Independence Square to the podium.
Members of the Maha Sangha, religious leaders, President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe and political leaders were present at the funeral service.
A large number of the public also attended the cremation ceremony.
The religious rites were conducted by the Chief incumbent of Kotte Sri Kalyani Saamagri Dharma Maha Sanga Saba, Venerable Iththapaane Dhammalankara thero.
Meanwhile President Maithripala Sirisena stated that the government expects to establish an Amaradeva Centre in honour of the legendary musician.
He requested artists to provide necessary guidance for this purpose.
The President made these remarks while delivering a condolence message during the funeral of late veteran musician Pandith W.D. Amaradeva.
