DMC warns of landslides as rains continue

Rains hammered Southern, Central, Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces last night. Hiru Correspondent said most roads in the Southern Province was flooded.

Minor landslides were also witnessed in some areas.

Residents in Thotamuna, Devinuwara, Walgama, Peekwella and Polathumodara in Matara were affected by flooding. A landslide in Peekwella left families in six houses affected, they are currently in makeshift homes.

Meanwhile, water levels in Kalu and Gin rivers are overflowing. According to the Disaster Management Center water levels in Nilwala River is also rising.

The landslide warning issues to Ratnapura, Kalutara, Galle and Matara districts were extended.

The Department of Meteorology stated that rains and thundershowers are expected in several places in the Southern, Central, Western,Sabaragamuwa and Eastern provinces.

However, the showery weather in the South-western part is expected to reduce today.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Southern provinces during the morning.
