The Attorney General has made it known that is not possible to express his views at this time in response to the request made by the Election Commission for clarification on the prevalent legal positioning regarding holding elections for local government bodies that have no problem with regard to demarcation.

An Election Commission spokesman told our news team that the Attorney General has informed the Commission that since three local government election related petitions were being heard before the Supreme Court, it was not possible to express views regarding the matter out of respect for the Supreme Court.

The Election Commission has written to the Attorney General enquiring about the legality of holding elections in the local government areas where there are no delimitation issues.

The Election Commission has taken this decision after election monitoring organizations informed the Commissioner that elections could be held for 61 local government institutes as they have no delimitation issues.

Meanwhile, PAFFREL has filed a petition with the Supreme Court requesting that an order be given to hold elections in the local government areas where delimitation has been completed.

Meanwhile MP Dallas Alahapperuma says that hereafter it will be impossible for the Government to cover its political nudity on the pretext of demarcation.

A group of representatives of the joint opposition met Election Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya yesterday and consulted him regarding the local government election.

Five Matara District MPs representing the joint opposition and a group of former local government councilors met with the election commission chairman Mahinda Deshapriya and held a discussion with him yesterday.
