A powerful magnitude-7.8 earthquake has struck New Zealand's South Island, killing at least 2 people.
The quake hit just last evening north-east of Christchurch, and was felt as far afield as the capital Wellington on the North Island, 200km away.
A tsunami arrived about 2 hours later. Officials warned everyone along the eastern coast to head inland or for higher ground.
A resident in the quake hit area explained his experience to media as follows.
