Customs hold 50 sugar containers to test for cocaine

Customs have held back 50 containers of sugar imported from Brazil as authorities suspect that some of the containers among have contraband of cocaine.

Customs Media Spokesman Dharmasena Kahandawa told our news team that the containers will not be released until they are thoroughly checked for narcotics.

Cocaine has been concealed in containers of sugar, imported from Brazil on three previous occasions.

The latest incident reported from Pethiyaagoda, had 31 kilograms of cocaine, with the face value of 450 million rupees, discovered cunningly concealed in sacks of sugar.

However,the Essential commodity importers association stated that some sugar importers have decreased trading with Brazil consequent to the constant seizure of containers of sugar by Customs.

Association’s Secretary G. Nadan told our news team the import of sugar from Brazil has reduced by 20% and, 80% of sugar is imported from other countries including Indian.
