The proposed water tariff increase by 30 percent has been suspended by the Cabinet of Ministers.

Addressing a media conference held this afternoon at the parliament complex; Minister Chandima Weerakkody said the decision was taken after lengthy discussions in the Cabinet.

The National Water Supply and Drainage Board announced on Saturday that the water tariff will be increased by 30 per cent on average with effect from December 01st 2016.  

President Maithripala Sirisena has pointed out that the increase in water tariff at this juncture is disputed.

Meanwhile, speaking in parliament, Water Supply Minister Rauff Hakeem stated that the Cabinet decided to appoint a committee of three ministers to reconsider the increase in water tariff.
