The suspect who allegedly shot at three policemen near a hotel at Maspotha on Kurunegala Puttalam road last night has been identified as Devamuni Harold Rohana de Silva alias Sudu Rohana.

He is also known as Loha. Police said the suspect is a notorious underworld leader.

Harold Rohana alias Sudu Rohana is also the main suspect of the murder of another narcotic dealer and underworld member Sudesh Wasantha alias Lansiya.

Lansiya was allegedly shot to death by Harold Rohana in front of the Mahara Magistrate Courts 4 months ago.

A senior police officer in charge of the Kurunegala Division stated that the suspect is being questioned over several crimes including the shooting at Maspotha yesterday.

The suspect had visited the hotel with an accomplice on a motor vehicle last night.

The Police had arrived at the spot to check the vehicle following a tip-off they received that a vehicle with a forged number plate was stationed near the known hotel in the area.

Earlier, the owner of the stolen vehicle who identified the location of the vehicle through GPS technology had sought the assistance of a relative to inform the police the presence of the stolen vehicle in Kurunegala.

When the suspects were ordered to report to police for further investigations, Harold Rohana alias Sudu Rohana had opened fire on police.

A 59 year old Sub inspector Rathna Bandara Dissanayake attached to the Kurunegala police died in the shooting.

In addition, police sergeant and a constable who sustained injuries in the shooting were hospitalized.

The gunmen fled the scene but later Harold Rohana was arrested while traveling by a bus plying between Kurunegala and Wariyapola.

Meanwhile, police have identified the accomplice of Harold Rohana as Matara Roshan, an underworld gang member.

Several police teams have already been deployed to arrest the suspect.

16 mobile phones and 8 forged vehicle number plates have been discovered at the hotel room where the suspects allegedly stayed in.

It is also revealed that the driving license and the national identity card used by Sudu Rohana were forged.
