A group of private bus operators responsible for several routes in the Southern Province have launched a bus strike in protest of the Budget 2017 proposal to increase the minimum fine for traffic violations to 2500 rupees.

Convener of All Ceylon Private Bus Workers Association Kumara Rathna Renuka said that bus drivers and employees that cover the routes from Galle, Matara, Tangalle and Kataragama have joined in the strike.

A similar strike was staged by bus workers in Kalutara, Panadura and Horana yesterday.

Kumara Rathna Renuka said that they will continue the strike if the government does not find a solution to the issue today.
