The government has decided to impose a minimum penalty of 25 thousand rupees on 7 traffic offences including drunk driving and driving a vehicle without a license.

This decision was taken during a meeting held at the Finance Ministry today.

Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake, Transport Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva and representatives from private bus associations, school bus drivers associations and three wheeler drivers associations participated in the discussion.

Chairman of the Lanka Private Bus Owners Association Gemunu Wijerathna who participated in the meeting said although his organization agreed on the fine imposed on serious traffic offenses, trade union action will be taken if fines are imposed on other minor offences.
