The Southern Province Bus Owners’ Union says that the 25,000 rupee minimum fine for seven traffic law violations, is unreasonable.

Southern Province Bus Owners’ Union chairman Chandana de Soysa told our news team that action would be taken in the future with regard to this after discussions are held with other unions.

It was decided at a discussion held at the Finance Ministry yesterday to increase the minimum fine to Rs. 25,000 for seven traffic law violations.

Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake, Transport Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva as well as representatives of bus owner, School transport and three-wheeler unions participated in the discussion.

Accordingly driving while drunk, driving without a valid driving licence, allowing a person without a valid driving licence to drive, speeding, overtaking from the left, violating traffic law with regard to railway crossings, and driving without an insurance certificate are the violations to which the new fine will apply.
