Minister Rajitha wants tobacco companies to pay a tax of 500 Million Rupees

Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine, Rajitha Senarathna stated that Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake has requested 500 million rupees from the Ceylon Tobacco Company as a donation, by mistake.

Speaking at a walk on raising public awareness on chronic spinal deforms held this morning at Independence Square, the minister stated that he has requested the finance minister to rather collect the amount as tax from Tobacco Companies and to donate it to the President’s Fund.

Meanwhile, Minister Rajitha Senarathna stated that from the 1st of January, blood tests of patients who receive treatment from government hospitals, will be prohibited from been taken at private laboratories.

He expressed these views yesterday at a ceremony held at Iththepana Disctrict Hospital, Agalawaththa.

The minister also noted that all hospitals equipped with laboratory facilities will be provided with machines needed for testing of blood samples by the 31st of December and that disciplinary action will be taken against all hospital directors if incidents of blood tests are made to be obtained from private laboratories.
