An automatic fire-arm used to shoot a police sub inspector at a hotel in Kurunegala has been discovered.

Police said that the fire-arm was unearthed from a backyard of a house in Thalagama, Kurunegala where one of the underworld members had lodged.

The suspect who allegedly shot at three policemen near a hotel at Maspotha on Kurunegala Puttalam road, November 15th, has been identified as Devamuni Harold Rohana de Silva alias Sudu Rohana.  Police said the suspect is a notorious underworld leader.

A 59-year-old sub inspector Rathna Bandara Dissanayake attached to the Kurunegala police died in the shooting.  In addition, a police sergeant and a constable who were also injured during the incident were hospitalized.

Later, the suspect Harold Rohana was arrested while travelling from Kurunegala to Wariyapola by bus. Police have identified Harold Rohana’s accomplice as Matara Roshan, also an underworld gang member. At the same time police believe there is a third suspect involved in the murder.

Meanwhile police are requesting the assistance of the public with any information that may lead to the arrest of the absconding suspects. A reward has been offered to anyone with information that leads to the arrest.
