A tense situation erupted at the National Transport Medical Institute in Nugegoda this morning as certain persons behaved in an unruly manner.

Chairman of National Transport Medical Institute Dr. Rohana Pushpakumara said that police was called to control the crowds who gathered to obtain medical certificates for driving licenses.

He further said that the number of applicants for driving licenses have risen unusually due to the increase in traffic fines up to 25,000 rupees.

Meanwhile, Transport Ministry Secretary Nihal Somaweera said that a proposal to extend the grace period to transfer vehicles until December 31st has been submitted to the Cabinet.

This grade period granted on September 1st will expire tomorrow.

The Cabinet is to discuss the new proposal during the Cabinet meeting this evening.
