Discussions with the President successful; Bus Companies call off strike

Private Bus Companies have said that the strike against the increased fines on traffic law violations will be called off following a successful discussion with President Maithripala Sirisena.

Secretary of the Private Bus Companies Federation Anjana Priyanjith said that the President stated that a final decision had not been reached on increasing fines.

If the fines are to be enacted it will be done after obtaining the views of bus companies.

The President’s Media Unit said that a Committee will be appointed as per instructions from the President to address the issues in the public transportation sector.

The Committee comprises the Secretaries of the Ministries of Finance and Transport, Senior DIG of Traffic, Attorney General and the Commissioner of Motor Traffic.

The Committee will not only look in to the increased fines but to all the issues prevalent in the bus industry.

Chairman of the Inter Province Private Bus Employees Association Sarath Wijitha Kumara stated that actions of the Chairman of the Lanka Private Bus Owners Association Gamunu Wijerathne pushed them towards the strike.

Secretary of the Private Bus Companies Federation Anjana Priyanjith said that the strike was called off following discussions with the President.
