John Key has announced that he will resign as prime minister of New Zealand, after 8 years in the job.

Key called it "the hardest decision he’s ever made, adding, he doesn’t know what he’ll do next.

Bill English is expected to take over until the National Party holds a caucus to choose a new Prime Minister.

Reports state that Key is stepping down at the request of his wife Bronagh. Key won a 3rd term for the National Party at elections of September 2014.
