Jayalalithaa Jayaram, one of India's most popular politicians, died last night after three months in hospital.

Her body, in a casket draped in the national flag, was kept at the city's Rajaji Hall, where lakhs are streaming in to pay tribute to their beloved "Amma".

A day of national mourning has been declared and all flags will fly at half-mast.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a galaxy of political leaders are heading to Chennai to pay homage to the four-time Chief Minister.

Her funeral will take place at Chennai's Marina Beach at 4.30 pm, close to the memorial of her mentor MG Ramachandran, her former co-star in films.
