Joint Opposition leader Dinesh Gunawardana says that he does not agree with the move to change the previous decision taken by parliament to amend the local government elections.

Gunawardana says in a statement that the opinion of the Joint Opposition is to hold the local government elections under the mixed system.

He also points out that reverting to the present system in which a local government member is elected, will cause distress to the people.

Meanwhile, JVP stated recently that it would contest local government elections if only elections are held under the existing proportional representation system.

However government responded to JVP that a conclusion would be arrived at after consulting political party leaders.
