Hundreds and thousands of mourners has gathered to pay respect to late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

She died last night following a heart attack, in Apollo Hospital in Chennai. Jayalalithaa was 68.

Her body was displayed to the public, draped in the Indian flag.

Reports say that security is also beefed.

Many of Jayalalithaa’s supporters call her ‘Amma’. The initial report of her death caused disruption in the state.

A seven-day period of mourning has been declared in Tamil Nadu. The central government in Delhi has announced that Tuesday will be a national holiday as a mark of respect and that she will be given a funeral with full state honours.
