Jayalalitha Jeyaram, one of India's most influential politicians, is being buried in the presence of tens of thousands of mourners.

The 68-year-old chief minister of the southern state of Tamil Nadu suffered a heart attack on Sunday and died yesterday.

President Maithripala Sirisena has published a twitter message expressing his condolences over the death of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa Jeyaram.

President Sirisena’s tweet states that Jayalalithaa was honoured by her supporters.   

The message has also extended the president’s condolences to the family of the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and the people of Tamil Nadu.

Meanwhile, former president Mahinda Rajapaksa tweeted that Chief Minister Jayalalitha Jeyaram had won the hearts of the people of Tamil Nadu.

He has also extended his condolences to the family of late Jayalalitha and the people of Tamil Nadu.

Meanwhile, Northern Provincial Council Chief Minister C.V. Wigneshwaran made a special statement and adjourned the council sessions for 10 minutes to pay tribute to the late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister.

Furthermore, TNA MP Charles Nirmala-nadan also made a statement.

In addition, our correspondents stated that residents from Upcountry paid tribute to former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister as well.

Our correspondents said that certain people refrained from daily routines and are engaged in religious rites at Kovils.
