Earthquake hits northern Sumatra, Indonesia

A strong undersea earthquake has rocked Indonesia's province of Aceh, on the northwest tip of Sumatra Island, but there are no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

It was initially reported as a magnitude 6.8 that struck10 kilometres north off Reuleut, a town in northern Aceh, at a depth of 17.2 kilometres.

The US Geological Survey has downgraded it to a 6.5 magnitude earthquake, and said there was a low likelihood of casualties and damage.

Indonesia's Climate Meteorology and Geophysics Agency says that the quake has no potential to trigger a tsunami.
